Rukomo Chapel

The Rukomo Chapel is conceived as a tripartite spatial composition embedded within the landscape. Its core gesture is a topographic incision — a carved descent that operates both as a physical pathway and as a spatial mediator between humans and the earth. This gradual movement downward creates a moment of humility and introspection, preparing visitors for a collective spiritual experience and reconnection with the Divine.

The central layer forms the primary worship space, emerging directly from the ground. Constructed in rammed earth, the walls rise with a subtle upward inclination, guiding the gaze toward the sky. This spatial gesture reinforces the symbolic dialogue between earth and heaven, expressing permanence, grounding, and spiritual aspiration.

The final layer is defined by a lightweight timber roof structure resting on the solid earthen walls. The raw wooden façade and exposed structural system introduce warmth and material contrast while remaining deeply rooted in local construction traditions. The chapel integrates seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, extending its relationship to the land and establishing itself as a nurturing communal anchor for the Rukomo community.
